Leicester City maintained their three-point lead at the top of the Championship table with a narrow 1-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Jamie Vardy scored the only goal of the game in the 13th minute, ending the Foxes’ three-match losing streak. Sunderland, meanwhile, suffered their fifth consecutive defeat and remained in the relegation zone.
Ipswich snatch late victory over Bristol City
Ipswich Town kept up the pressure on Leicester with a dramatic 3-2 win over Bristol City at Portman Road. The Tractor Boys trailed twice in the second half, but fought back with goals from Ali al-Hamadi, Conor Chaplin and Leif Davis. Davis scored the winner in the 89th minute, heading in a cross from Kane Vincent-Young. Bristol City, who had taken the lead through Anis Mehmeti and Tommy Conway, missed the chance to move into the play-off places.
James fires Leeds past Stoke
Leeds United stayed in touch with the top two with a 1-0 win over Stoke City at Elland Road. Dan James scored the decisive goal in the 33rd minute, finishing off a swift counter-attack. Stoke had opportunities to equalise, but were denied by Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier. The Potters also had Ben Pearson sent off in the late stages for a second yellow card.
Wednesday climb out of bottom three; Coventry thrash Rotherham
Sheffield Wednesday moved out of the bottom three on goal difference with a 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough. Djeidi Gassama scored the winner on the hour mark, converting a cross from Ike Ugbo. The Owls have now won four games in a row under new manager Steve Cooper. Plymouth, who had Ryan Hardie sent off in the first half, dropped to 18th in the table.
Coventry City moved up to seventh in the table with a 5-0 rout of bottom club Rotherham United at the CBS Arena. Ellis Simms scored a hat-trick in the first half, while Joel Latibeaudiere and Fábio Tavares added further goals after the break. Rotherham have now lost seven games in a row and are 19 points adrift of safety.
Hull and Birmingham share the spoils
Hull City and Birmingham City played out a 1-1 draw at the KCOM Stadium. Ozan Tufan gave Hull the lead in the 25th minute with a header from a corner. Birmingham equalised in the 82nd minute through Lukas Jutkiewicz, who tapped in a cross from Scott Hogan. Hull remain in sixth place, while Birmingham are one point above the drop zone.
