In a recent study by Akamai Technologies, it was revealed that 87% of digital native businesses (DNBs) in Asia now prioritize security over cost and scalability when selecting cloud providers. This shift highlights the growing importance of cybersecurity in an era where technology adoption is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. The study underscores the challenges and opportunities faced by DNBs as they navigate the complexities of cloud adoption and strive for sustainable growth.

The Shift Towards Security

The Akamai study indicates a significant shift in priorities among DNBs. Traditionally, cost and scalability were the primary factors in cloud provider selection. However, the increasing frequency and sophistication of cyber threats have compelled these businesses to place a higher emphasis on security. This change is particularly evident in regions like Australia and New Zealand, where 97% of DNBs are either adopting or exploring cloud solutions. The focus on security is not just about protecting data but also about ensuring business continuity and maintaining customer trust.

87% of Digital Native Businesses Prioritize Security Over Cost and Scalability

The study also highlights that 74% of DNBs have either fully migrated to the cloud or are in the process of doing so. This widespread adoption of cloud technologies is driven by the need for greater efficiency and productivity. However, it also brings with it increased complexity and potential vulnerabilities. As a result, DNBs are investing heavily in cybersecurity measures to mitigate these risks and safeguard their operations.

In India, the emphasis on security is even more pronounced, with 98% of DNBs integrating AI within their cloud infrastructure. This integration is aimed at enhancing security protocols and improving threat detection capabilities. The proactive approach taken by Indian DNBs reflects their commitment to staying ahead of cyber threats and ensuring the resilience of their digital ecosystems.

Balancing Innovation and Security

While security has become a top priority, DNBs are also focused on innovation and growth. The Akamai study reveals that 9 in 10 DNBs prioritize efficiency and productivity over the next 12 months. This dual focus on security and innovation is driving the adoption of advanced technologies such as cloud computing and API-enabled microservices. These technologies enable DNBs to scale rapidly and improve their time to market, giving them a competitive edge in the digital landscape.

However, the rapid pace of technology adoption also presents challenges. The complexity of managing multiple cloud environments and ensuring seamless integration can expose DNBs to cyber risks. To address these challenges, DNBs are adopting a multicloud approach, which allows them to leverage the strengths of different cloud providers while avoiding vendor lock-in. This strategy enhances flexibility and optimizes cloud service usage and costs.

The study also points out that cutting-edge technology is at the core of DNBs’ DNA. This tech-first mindset, while beneficial for innovation, can sometimes hamper cybersecurity efforts. Therefore, DNBs must strike a balance between embracing new technologies and maintaining robust security measures. By doing so, they can achieve sustainable growth and protect their digital assets.

The Road Ahead for Digital Native Businesses

Looking ahead, the future of DNBs in Asia appears promising but challenging. The Akamai study projects that DNBs will spend up to $128.9 billion on technology by 2026, with the highest growth rate in cloud-based technologies at 37.3%. This substantial investment underscores the critical role of technology in driving business growth and competitiveness.

However, as DNBs continue to expand their digital footprint, they must remain vigilant against evolving cyber threats. The study emphasizes the need for continuous improvement in cybersecurity practices and the adoption of innovative solutions to stay ahead of potential risks. Collaboration with cloud providers and cybersecurity experts will be crucial in building resilient digital infrastructures.

In conclusion, the Akamai study highlights the evolving priorities of digital native businesses in Asia. The shift towards prioritizing security over cost and scalability reflects the growing recognition of cybersecurity as a fundamental aspect of business strategy. By balancing innovation with robust security measures, DNBs can navigate the complexities of the digital landscape and achieve sustainable growth.
