Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Hits Lowest Price Yet During Prime Day and Walmart’s Massive Summer Deals

For fans of old-school RPGs or anyone just curious about one of gaming’s legendary series, now’s probably the best time to jump in. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake just hit $35, its lowest price ever, as part of Amazon Prime Day and Walmart’s summer sales event.

The price drop, down from the usual $60, applies to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X versions—but availability depends on where you shop. Amazon’s already sold out of Xbox copies, while Walmart is hanging on to a few. If you’re eyeing the PS5 version, that’s an Amazon exclusive for now.

A Rare Discount on a Classic Reimagined

This isn’t just any sale. The HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III only came out recently, and this is the first time it’s been discounted this heavily. For long-time fans, that’s a big deal.

Launched in November 2024, this remake gives the original 1988 Famicom title a massive facelift. Think vivid pixel art with 3D lighting and depth—the same visual style that made Octopath Traveler pop. It’s not just a graphical update either. The devs tweaked battle pacing, added save conveniences, and even refreshed the soundtrack with orchestrated versions.

That’s probably why this version got such strong praise across gaming sites and forums alike.

Where to Grab a Copy Before They Vanish

Here’s how it breaks down across retailers. No complicated charts needed—just the facts:

  • Amazon:

    • PS5 – In stock

    • Nintendo Switch – In stock

    • Xbox Series X – Sold out

  • Walmart:

    • Xbox Series X – Available

    • Nintendo Switch – Available

    • PS5 – Not listed

That means Switch players have the easiest time right now. But if you’re on Xbox, Walmart might be your only option.

Meanwhile, the PS5 deal is one of the few Prime Day exclusives that hasn’t vanished within hours.

Still the Gold Standard for Classic JRPGs

Why’s Dragon Quest III such a big deal anyway? Good question.

Originally released back in 1988, it was one of the first RPGs to introduce a full-on class-changing system, a customizable party, and a sort of open-world progression that let players explore the map in different ways. That was revolutionary back then.

This remake doesn’t change much narratively. That’s a good thing. It still tells the tale of a young hero destined to defeat a dark force, tying together what’s known as the Erdrick Trilogy—the original three Dragon Quest titles.

Quick bullet-point refresher on what the remake improves:

  • HD-2D graphics with rich, layered backgrounds and lighting

  • Orchestrated soundtrack replaces the 8-bit chiptunes

  • Adjustable battle speed for smoother pacing

  • Auto-save and quick-save support

  • Minor new cutscenes and added polish

Fans love how it walks that line—new look, but same soul.

Square Enix Is Going All In on HD-2D

And here’s where things get more interesting.

Square Enix isn’t stopping with DQ III. The company recently confirmed that remakes of Dragon Quest I and II are also in development and will be bundled together for a October 30 release.

That’s a strategic move. It’ll complete the full Erdrick Trilogy for modern consoles in one generation. Smart timing, too—just ahead of the holidays.

There’s still no word on whether future titles like Dragon Quest IV or V will get the same HD-2D treatment, but if this bundle performs well, don’t be surprised if they’re next in line.

Only time will tell.

Other JRPG Deals Worth a Look This Week

Dragon Quest III might be the spotlight deal, but it’s not the only Square Enix RPG on sale during Prime Day.

Amazon has quietly dropped prices on a few other fan-favorites, particularly for fans of turn-based combat and deep storytelling. We’ve pulled together a handful worth bookmarking:

Title Platform Sale Price Original Price
Persona 5 Royal PS5 $25 $60
Octopath Traveler II Switch $40 $60
Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection PS4/Switch $50 $75
Suikoden I & II HD Remaster PS4 $30 $45
Live A Live Switch $35 $60

The Persona 5 Royal deal is especially tempting, and it’s not often Suikoden gets discounted at all.

Let’s be honest—this might be the best time of the year if you’re into JRPGs. Between the legacy franchises, HD remasters, and some sneaky good indie releases, it’s a buffet out there.

What This Means for Collectors and Newcomers Alike

Here’s the real kicker: this sale isn’t just about price—it’s about timing. For collectors, grabbing the physical version of Dragon Quest III HD-2D could be worth it in the long haul. There’s no guarantee it’ll stay in print forever.

And for first-time players? It’s probably the easiest way to see why this series has been such a huge deal in Japan since the ’80s.

This is the kind of game that wears its heart on its sleeve. Old mechanics, sure—but wrapped in enough newness to feel right at home in 2025.

Don’t be shocked if these copies vanish fast. Amazon’s already halfway there.
