The University of Bristol is set to become a global leader in virtual production technology, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership with Lux Machina Consulting. This collaboration will bring the cutting-edge technology used in the popular series “House of the Dragon” to the university’s new state-of-the-art facility. The initiative aims to transform the way films, TV shows, and games are created, offering unprecedented opportunities for innovation and creativity in the industry.

A New Era of Virtual Production

The University of Bristol’s new virtual production stage is a game-changer for the creative industries. This advanced facility uses computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create immersive and dynamic backdrops, replacing traditional green screens. Actors and directors can now interact with realistic environments, enhancing their performances and storytelling. The virtual production stage is part of a multi-million-pound investment in the university’s Temple Quarter, designed to foster collaboration between academics and industry professionals.

The facility also includes a 35-seat Smart Cinema, equipped with monitoring technology to measure audience reactions. This unique feature allows creators to gain valuable insights into how their content is received, enabling them to refine and improve their work. The Smart Cinema is expected to attract global leaders in the entertainment industry, from major studios like Netflix and Amazon to independent filmmakers and freelancers.

Oscar De Mello, Operations Director at MyWorld, emphasized the importance of this partnership in combining world-leading research with cutting-edge production facilities. He believes that the new stage and wider facility will empower creatives to push the boundaries of what is possible in virtual production and beyond.

Collaboration with Lux Machina Consulting

Lux Machina Consulting, renowned for its work on “House of the Dragon,” is bringing its expertise to the University of Bristol. The company’s technology has been instrumental in creating the stunning visual effects that bring dragon flight to life in the series. By partnering with the university, Lux Machina aims to provide students and professionals with access to the latest tools and techniques in virtual production.

David Elliott, Lux’s Producer on the project, expressed excitement about the collaboration. He highlighted the potential for the new facility to drive innovation and creativity in the industry. The partnership is expected to attract talent from around the world, making Bristol a hub for cutting-edge virtual production.

The new specialist facilities are being built as part of the MyWorld programme, a £30 million UKRI Strength in Places funded initiative. This programme aims to build on the production, technology, and research strengths of the West of England, catalyzing the local economy while creating a global impact in the creative industries.

Transforming the Creative Landscape

The University of Bristol’s investment in virtual production technology is set to revolutionize the creative landscape. The new facilities will provide a platform for experimentation and innovation, allowing creators to explore new possibilities in film, TV, and gaming. The combination of the virtual production stage and Smart Cinema offers a unique environment for testing and refining new ideas.

Ben Lumsden, formerly of Epic Games and now with Dimension Studio, praised the initiative for its potential to attract talent and drive growth in the creative industries. He believes that the new facility will encourage more people from the creative sector to come to Bristol, creating exciting opportunities for collaboration and development.

The University of Bristol’s commitment to fostering innovation and creativity is evident in its partnership with Lux Machina and the MyWorld programme. By providing access to state-of-the-art technology and facilities, the university is positioning itself as a leader in the global creative industry. The new virtual production stage and Smart Cinema are set to become a focal point for cutting-edge research and development, driving the future of entertainment.
