Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — A unique partnership continues at the CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival, aimed at supporting local young musicians. The heart of this initiative lies in the donation of used instruments to city school students. These instruments serve as a gateway to creativity and learning, fostering a love for music that extends beyond the classroom.
Instrument Donation: A Harmonious Collaboration
The Rochester Education Foundation (REF) spearheads this noble endeavor, working closely with M&T Bank. Over the past 15 years, they have collected an impressive 3,700 instruments. These donations empower students like Xavier Wiggins, an upcoming RIT sophomore who received his saxophone while in high school. Xavier expresses gratitude for his new instrument and looks forward to playing it even more during college.
Beyond Music: Equity, Joy, and College Readiness
Xavier’s brother, Trevor, also benefited from the REF’s support. Trevor received a bass trombone, his dream instrument, through the foundation. Beyond providing musical equity and joy, the REF has made college access and readiness easier for students like Trevor. Their commitment extends beyond notes and scales, emphasizing holistic growth and opportunity.
How You Can Contribute
The instrument drive is ongoing, and there’s still time to make a difference. Visit the REF booth on jazz street between 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM during the festival. Your contribution could unlock a world of possibilities for a young musician.
