Bengaluru, often celebrated for its pleasant and consistent climate, remains true to its reputation today. The city is expected to witness temperatures ranging from a soothing 20°C in the morning to a peak of 29°C later in the day. The hallmark of December in Bengaluru is its mild cold, low humidity, and clear skies, making it a favorite for both residents and visitors. However, the story of weather across India is far from uniform.

North India Gripped by Bitter Cold Waves

While Bengaluru enjoys its characteristic comfort, North India is grappling with a biting cold wave. With temperatures plummeting across states such as Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert. The chilling conditions are further intensified by the onset of a Western Disturbance, which is expected to worsen the situation in the coming days.

The severity of the cold wave has raised concerns about public health and daily activities in these regions. Schools and offices may face disruptions, and vulnerable populations, including the elderly and young children, are especially at risk.

Bengaluru weather forecast December climate news

Southern States Brace for Rainfall and Storms

In stark contrast, the southern coastal areas are gearing up for rainfall. The IMD predicts light to moderate showers in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Puducherry. Some parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema may even witness heavy downpours, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

This forecast is due to a weather system bringing in moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. The conditions could lead to waterlogging in urban centers, disruptions in transportation, and potential impacts on agriculture, especially in low-lying areas.

What the IMD Says About the Coming Western Disturbance

The IMD has also issued warnings about an intense Western Disturbance expected to hit Northwest India starting from December 26. This system is likely to bring significant changes to the weather, including rainfall, thunderstorms, and snowfall at higher altitudes.

A cyclonic circulation is projected to develop over southwest Rajasthan by December 27. When combined with easterly winds at lower atmospheric levels, this disturbance is expected to usher in moisture from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The result? Widespread rain and snow across states like Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jammu and Kashmir.

A Look at the Anticipated Weather Events in Numbers

Region Forecast Dates
North India Severe cold wave; snowfall Dec 24–28
Southern Coast Rainfall, thunderstorms Dec 24–25
Northwest India Intense rainfall, potential snow Dec 26–28

Advisories and Preparations for Affected Regions

The forecasted weather conditions could lead to multiple challenges. Residents in North India should prepare for harsh cold, ensuring adequate heating and warm clothing. Meanwhile, in southern states, authorities are urging caution regarding potential urban flooding and power disruptions.

  • For Northern Regions: Stock up on essential supplies, avoid unnecessary travel, and prioritize warmth and safety.
  • For Southern Regions: Ensure drainage systems are clear, avoid venturing into waterlogged areas, and stay updated with local advisories.

With India’s vast and varied geography, these contrasting weather patterns underscore the diverse challenges posed by nature. Whether it’s battling cold waves or bracing for rainfall, preparedness is key to staying safe.
