The Panjab University Student Council (PUSC) elections are heating up with a slew of promises aimed at improving student life. From health insurance to better hostel food, candidates are leaving no stone unturned to win votes. The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Students’ Organisation of India (SOI), and Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) are all vying for the top spots with ambitious agendas.
Health Insurance and Women’s Gym
One of the standout promises this election season is the introduction of health insurance for students. Both NSUI and ABVP have pledged to provide comprehensive health coverage, ensuring that students have access to necessary medical services without financial strain. This initiative is expected to significantly alleviate the burden of medical expenses for students and their families.
In addition to health insurance, the establishment of a women’s gym has been a focal point. NSUI has promised to create a dedicated space for female students to exercise and stay fit. This initiative aims to promote physical health and well-being among women, providing them with a safe and supportive environment to work out.
The women’s gym will also offer self-defense classes, empowering female students with the skills to protect themselves. This is part of a broader effort to enhance campus safety and ensure that all students feel secure.
Better Hostel Food and Facilities
Improving hostel food quality is another major promise. Candidates from various parties have highlighted the need for nutritious and tasty meals in hostels. ABVP has proposed the installation of commercial washing machines and air conditioners in hostels, aiming to improve the living conditions for students.
SOI has also pledged to enhance hostel facilities by expanding library resources and improving sanitation. These measures are expected to create a more comfortable and conducive living environment for students, allowing them to focus better on their studies.
The promise of better hostel food and facilities is a response to long-standing complaints from students about the quality of meals and the state of hostel amenities. By addressing these issues, candidates hope to win the trust and support of the student body.
Scholarships and Safety Measures
Scholarships and safety measures are also high on the agenda. NSUI has promised to increase the “earn while you learn” fund to ₹27,500 per head, providing financial support to students who need it. This initiative aims to reduce the financial burden on students and encourage them to pursue their academic goals without worrying about expenses.
ABVP has proposed the establishment of pink security booths near girls’ hostels and a helpline for social media abuse targeting female students. These measures are designed to enhance the safety and security of female students on campus, addressing concerns about harassment and abuse.
CYSS has pledged to create a centralized placement cell and offer full-time gynecological and psychological support. These initiatives aim to provide comprehensive support to students, ensuring their physical and mental well-being.
