In a significant move to enhance its mission of spreading the love for books, Edinburgh-based book wholesaler Bookspeed has announced a major expansion. The family-owned business, known for its high-profile clients and commitment to inclusivity, has acquired additional warehouse space to boost its capacity by over 40%. This expansion is set to modernize their operations and support their goal of increasing book distribution, reflecting a growing trend of people gravitating towards physical books in the digital age.

A Fortuitous Expansion

Bookspeed’s recent acquisition of a neighboring building at its Leith site marks a pivotal moment for the company. The new space, expected to be operational by spring 2025, will add 12,000 square feet to their existing warehouse and office facilities. This expansion comes after a period of strong growth over the past five years, positioning the company to increase its turnover by 50% in the next five years. Managing Director Lewis Dawson described the timing of the deal as “very fortuitous,” highlighting the positive changes and improvements it will bring to their operations.

The additional space will allow Bookspeed to further modernize its warehouse, introducing more efficiencies and improvements. This is not the first time the company has expanded its capacity; a similar expansion took place in 2017. The continuous growth and modernization efforts underscore Bookspeed’s commitment to its mission of putting more books into the world. The expansion is also expected to create new job opportunities, contributing to the local economy.

Bookspeed’s founders, Annie Rhodes and Kingsley Dawson, who remain actively involved in the business, started the company nearly 40 years ago. Their vision of a next-day books wholesale service with a focus on inclusivity has grown into a thriving enterprise with over 70 employees. The company’s dedication to diversity and inclusivity is reflected in its wide range of book offerings, catering to various interests and backgrounds.

High-Profile Clients and Diverse Offerings

Bookspeed’s client list includes prestigious names such as Historic Environment Scotland, the National Trust, and Fortnum & Mason. The company supplies thousands of UK retailers with approximately two million books annually, serving sectors like gift, culture and heritage, visitor attractions, and garden centers. Their customers also include well-known retailers like Oliver Bonas, Westminster Abbey, and the Natural History Museum.

The books supplied by Bookspeed are carefully curated to enhance the stories and experiences of the places where they are sold. For instance, books available at historic sites provide deeper insights into the history and architecture of the location. Similarly, books in retail stores add depth to the shopping experience, aligning with the retailer’s brand and message. This thoughtful approach to book selection has helped Bookspeed build strong relationships with its clients and maintain a reputation for quality and relevance.

In addition to its core business, Bookspeed is also tapping into the growing trend of people buying physical books as gifts. Managing Director Lewis Dawson notes that gifting books is seen as a thoughtful gesture, reflecting the giver’s understanding of the recipient’s interests. This trend has been particularly noticeable in the post-pandemic period, as people seek meaningful and lasting gifts.

Embracing the Physical Book Trend

The expansion of Bookspeed comes at a time when there is a noticeable shift towards physical books, especially in aspirational leisure sectors. Consumers are increasingly valuing the tactile experience of holding a book, which contrasts with the digital devices that dominate many aspects of modern life. This shift is partly driven by concerns about the impact of digital devices on mental well-being, leading people to seek more tangible and immersive experiences.

Bookspeed’s Managing Director, Lewis Dawson, emphasizes the importance of physical books in today’s digital age. He believes that books offer a unique way to connect with stories and ideas, providing a break from the constant screen time that many people experience. The company’s expansion is aimed at meeting this growing demand for physical books, ensuring that more people have access to a wide range of titles.

The company’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity is also a key factor in its success. By offering books that cater to various interests and backgrounds, Bookspeed ensures that there is something for everyone. This inclusive approach has helped the company build a loyal customer base and establish itself as a trusted name in the book wholesale industry.
