The Shalom Food Pantry in Albany recently hosted its 7th annual Battle of the BBQ fundraising event at the Albany Jewish Community Center. This event has become a staple in the food pantry’s mission to feed the community and address food insecurity in the Capitol Region.
Event Highlights
Eight teams from across the Capitol Region participated in the BBQ competition, vying for the title of best barbecue. The event drew nearly 400 attendees who sampled the delicious offerings and cast their votes. But beyond the mouthwatering food, the day held a deeper purpose.
Raising Awareness
David Weinraub, an attendee, emphasized that the event was about more than just enjoying barbecue. “People are surprised by how much poverty and food insecurity exist in the region,” he said. “This event opens eyes and hearts, encouraging us to do the right thing for our neighbors.”
Growing Need
The Shalom Food Pantry has experienced an all-time high in demand for food this year. Chanie Simon, a representative from the pantry, explained that the pandemic led to increased need, prompting them to serve entirely new communities. “We provide food for four different counties in the area,” Simon said. “People you’d never expect are struggling.”
Community Support
Mark Swyer, a competitor from the Congregation of Beth Emeth, stressed the importance of supporting the pantry. “This event helps meet the financial needs of the Shalom Food Pantry,” Swyer said. “Without it, providing food to those in need would be incredibly challenging.”
A Call to Action
Weinraub hopes that other organizations will follow suit and organize events that bring people together to address food insecurity. “I encourage community organizations and individuals to rally around important causes like this,” he said. “It’s a great thing.”
And the Winner Is…
This year’s Battle of the BBQ crowned Abe and Jakes, representing the Albany Congregation, Beth Abraham-Jacob, as the champions. Their flavorful barbecue not only delighted taste buds but also contributed to a worthy cause.
